Stud History

“Kooringal” comes from the local Wiradjuri language and means home on the hill. Five generations of Lamonts have worked the same 2,500 acres north of Wagga Wagga.

1910

The hill is named

John and Christina Lamont come north from Victoria and take up nearly 3,000 acres. They build a Federation-style brick homestead and cypress pine sheds, and plant the wisteria and Virginia creeper still on the house today.

1917

Christina carries it

John dies, leaving Christina to manage the property and raise three children. She runs Kooringal for the next three decades.

1953

Three broodmares

Colin, home from the war in Perth with his bride Joan, buys three broodmares. The stallion Kerry Piper follows in 1956 and the thoroughbred operation begins in earnest.

1960

Timor arrives

The Epsom Cup winner Timor comes to stand at Kooringal and the enterprise turns commercial. Major General, Bless Me, Majaahed, Mr Henrysee and Bureaucracy follow him.

1980s

Four hundred head

David and Stuart expand to over 400 thoroughbreds alongside sheep and cropping. Stuart and Penny build the infrastructure that runs the place today — six yard systems, more than sixty tree-lined paddocks, and the laneway network.

Today

The fifth generation

Angus and Richard Lamont manage the stud as partners, with Stuart still on the place and James looking after the stud from Victoria. Angus's children — Sophia, Arabella and Jack — are the fifth generation growing up on the hill.
