Exciting prospect Tropical Squall has propelled her fledgling sire Prized Icon into the metropolitan spotlight.
Tropical Squall could hardly have been more impressive when she burst on to the racing scene with an all-the-way win over 1250m at Canterbury on June 21 (pictured).
It was a memorable milestone for Prized Icon, celebrating his first win as a sire from a limited number of starters in his first crop.
“Prized Icon was a quality two-year-old himself so it’s no surprise to see him produce juveniles with plenty of class,” Kooringal Stud’s Angus Lamont said.
The son of champion sire More Than Ready was retired to Kooringal with two Group 1 wins and $2.1 million in prizemoney to his name.
Kooringal sent Fusaichi Pegasus mare Squalls to Prized Icon in his first season and the resultant foal was a brown or black filly who went on to be sold for $16,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
Purchased by Gooree Park Stud – which also raced Prized Icon throughout his career – the youngster was named Tropical Squall and placed in the hands of the Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott operation.
The powerful stable sent Tropical Squall straight to the paddock following her debut victory.
“She is a lovely two-year-old and she looks the type who will keep improving with time,” Angus said.
“We saw Prized Icon win the 1600-metre Champagne Stakes at two and then blitz his rivals over 2500 metres in the Victoria Derby the following season.
“His progeny should continue to go from strength to strength in the new season.”
City success has been timely for Prized Icon, who is a member of a star-studded stallion line-up in 2023.
Prized Icon ($8800 inc GST) will stand alongside Group 1 sire Merchant Navy ($13,200), the flying Finance Tycoon ($11,000), Snitzel’s son Sandbar ($8800) and the evergreen The Brothers War (price on application).
